Pride Month 2027: when it is, its history, and how to celebrate

Pride Month 2027 runs from June 1 to June 30, 2027. Every June, LGBTQ+ people and allies around the world celebrate queer life, remember the people who fought for equality, and push for the rights still to be won.

Why is Pride Month in June?

In the early hours of June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City's Greenwich Village. Raids like it were routine, but that night the patrons, among them trans women of colour such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, fought back. Days of protest followed, and the Stonewall uprising became a turning point for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

On its first anniversary, in June 1970, activists including Brenda Howard, known as the "Mother of Pride", organised the Christopher Street Liberation Day march in New York, with marches in Los Angeles and Chicago around the same time. Those were the first Pride marches, and June has been Pride Month ever since.

Pride Month today

What started as protest marches is now a worldwide season of parades, festivals, memorials and community events. Pride is still a protest as much as a party: in many countries LGBTQ+ people still face discrimination, violence and laws that criminalise who they are. Not every city celebrates in June. London Pride is usually in July, and Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras runs in February and March.

How to celebrate Pride Month

  • Go to a Pride march or festival

Most cities hold a parade, march or festival; smaller towns often have picnics, drag shows and community fairs.

  • Find your community

Join a local LGBTQ+ group, meetup or online community. Pride is about connection as much as celebration.

  • Learn the history

Read about Stonewall, the AIDS crisis and the people who fought for the rights the community has today.

  • Support LGBTQ+ organisations

Donate to, volunteer with or shop from LGBTQ+ charities, helplines and queer-owned businesses.

  • Fly a flag that fits

Learn what each pride flag means and fly the one that represents you or the people you stand with.

  • Look after each other

Pride can be hard for people who aren't out or safe at home. Check in on friends and respect people's privacy.
